the Site
Languageandculture.net was started in Spring 2000 as a Language and Culture Club to put on travel and culture seminars at the local Library. It has evolved into non-profit on-line poetry journal and is located in Pleasanton, Ca.; 45 minutes east of San Francisco. Thanks to all the language editors
who are dedicated to poetry.

Slavic Languages Editor ![]() John Compton John Compton is a computer scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. He has an M.A. in Linguistics and enjoys learning foreign languages as a hobby. He translates poems from Russian, French, German, and Italian to English, and occasionally writes original poems in those languages. His other hobbies are traveling, reading, and doing math research. ![]() Marie Delgado Travis Marie Delgado Travis is proud of her Nuyorican roots. She possesses Masters Degrees in Literature and Law and worked in Advertising / Marketing for top companies for 20+ years. She has won awards for her poetry and prose in English and Spanish. Her poetry chapbook MIRACLES: A Collection of (Mostly) Humorous Poetry won Honorable Mention at the Tenth Annual Latino Book Awards (2008) in the Best Poetry Book in English category. MIRACLES is currently featured in her full-length book, BLOSSOM: A Collection of Poetry in English. Marie's bilingual poetry collection LA VENTANA / THE WINDOW earned Honorable Mention, Ninth Annual International Latino Book Awards (2007).The title poem, "The Window" won Second Place in the 2005 Tom Howard Poetry Contest (over 1,600 entries received). Two of her poems were commended in the same contest. She was also selected Juried Poet, 2007 Houston PoetryFest. Her work has appeared in CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE LATINO SOUL (2005), SOPA DE POLLO PARA EL ALMA LATINA (2008) and ACROSS THE LONG BRIDGE: An Anthology of Award-Winning Poetry (2006). Her work has also been spotlighted in literary journals (ARDENT!, SPIKY PALM, LUCIDITY). She is the Poetry Editor for www.longstoryshort.us. There she learned Italian and French, has her 'Certificat de Langue Française' from the Université de Nancy, and has continued her language study by translating poetry. Currently she translates modern Italian and French poets. She also has been leading a monthly Italian language group for 8 years. Her own poetry includes the English, Italian and French languages with a love of nature and strong, appealing visualization. Her poems and translations have appeared, among others, in RB Viewpoint, Cipherjournal.com, Blue Unicorn, as well as local anthologies and in overseas poetry web sites. Her short story "A Little Bit of Old Faithful" won first prize in the annual prose contest at www.poeticdiversity.org in 2006 and she taught “Rewards of Translating Poetry” online at www.museitupclub.tripod.com, October, 2006 and taught “Aspects of Poetic Imagery” in October, 2007. She is co-author of: A Cutting Edge: translations of Rainer Rilke, self-published in 2005. She is currently working on family memoirs. Middle Eastern Languages Editor ![]() Dr. Majid Naficy Majid Naficy, doctorate in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from UCLA, was born in In the seventies, Majid was politically active against the Shah's regime. After the 1979 Revolution, the new regime began to suppress the opposition; his first wife Ezzat Tabaianand and brother Sa'id were executed. He fled He has published eight collections of poems: After the Silence, Sorrow of the Border, Poems of Dr. Naficy is an essayist and has published many essays.
