Equestrian fliers John Woodsworth Late at night along Kutuzovsky just in front of my flat I see galloping at full tilt three steeds. Late at night along Kutuzovsky, their cowboy hats tilted, three people are riding, at full speed. Where are they going, these present-day horsemen — to rescue the boy-prince from the Kremlin's hall? Where are they going, these equestrian fliers? — To save Russia's capital from the rouble's fall! Moscow 27 September 1998 This poem was written a few months after a sharp devaluation of the rouble. At the time, enterprising businessmen were offering tourists, for a princely sum, horseback rides up and down Kutuzovsky Avenue late at night. Translated from the Russian by John Woodsworth 16 March 2005 |
